About the Role

What Does a Medical Receptionist Do?

A medical receptionist is the first point of contact for patients at a GP surgery or primary care setting. It's a varied, patient-facing role that combines administration, communication, and a genuine understanding of how a GP practice runs.

  • Booking & managing patient appointments
  • Answering phones & triaging patient queries
  • Processing repeat prescriptions
  • Maintaining patient records (EMIS / SystmOne)
  • Liaising with clinical staff and practice managers

Day-to-Day Duties

What to Expect as a Medical Receptionist

The role varies by practice, but these are the core responsibilities you'll encounter in most GP surgery and PCN settings.

Patient Calls & Triage

Answering inbound patient calls, booking appointments, and signposting to the appropriate clinician or service.

Appointment Management

Managing the clinical diary — booking, cancelling, and rescheduling appointments across multiple clinicians.

Prescription Processing

Handling repeat prescription requests and liaising with the dispensary or pharmacy as required.

Clinical System Admin

Maintaining accurate patient records in EMIS Web or SystmOne — coding, letters, and referral administration.

Care Navigation

Guiding patients to the right service — GP, ANP, pharmacist, social prescriber, or external provider.

General Administration

Post, scanning, filing, QOF recalls, and supporting the practice manager with administrative tasks.

Why SHR Group

The Primary Care Non-Clinical Specialists

We place non-clinical staff into GP settings every week. We understand what practices need and what candidates want.

GP Practice Specialists

We only recruit for primary care — so we understand the difference between EMIS and SystmOne, what care navigation means, and what a busy Monday morning looks like.

What People Say

Trusted by Candidates & Practices Alike

SHR found me a full-time receptionist role at a lovely GP surgery in Islington within two weeks. They were supportive throughout and prepared me brilliantly for the interview.

HannahMedical Receptionist, London

We've used SHR to fill two receptionist roles this year. Both candidates were excellent — they clearly understood what a GP practice actually needs from front-of-house staff.

Practice ManagerGP Surgery, Manchester

I'd been looking for a part-time role that fit around school hours for months. SHR found me the perfect 20-hour position at a local PCN within weeks. Couldn't be happier.
